DO NOT enroll in the USBE SLT-ARL Program if you are already enrolled or are planning to enroll in a University preparation program.
Welcome to SLT-ARL: USBE’s Alternate Path to Professional Educator Licensure for Speech Language Technician. This license qualifies you to be employed as a SLT serving students in grades kindergarten through 12th while working under the supervision of a Utah licensed Speech Language Pathologist.
Please note this program leads to licensure only–not a degree. This program is available to participants who already have:

- A bachelor's degree in Communication Disorders or equivalent degree major
- A current Special Education assignment as an SLT

- USBE - Utah State Board of Education
Upon completion of the SLT-ARL program, participants will be recommended for SpEd Professional Educator Licensure. Your Associate Educator License is good for three academic years. You must finish all of the requirements during that time to receive your Professional Educator License in Speech Language Technician.

Getting Started
The prerequisites to apply for USBE’s SLT-ARL program are the same as steps 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the Associate Educator License application requirements. Use the link here Links to an external site. to complete steps 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Apply to the SLT-ARL Program (step 5 on the AEL checklist)
After you complete steps 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the AEL requirements, you need to complete the Educator Licensing Pedagogical Modules. Although you are not a classroom teacher, you are providing specially designed instruction in a classroom type setting. This is different from a therapy or medical setting and the Educator Licensing Pedagogical Modules will help prepare you.
You are now ready to apply to USBE’s SLT-ARL preparation program using the link below. Once the form is submitted, you will be enrolled in USBE’s SLT Jump Start. This is an asynchronous course that has to be completed before you get an enrollment letter into the SLT-ARL program.
After you complete the SLT Jump Start, you will need to complete the SLT Institute. The SLT Institute is a three day, synchronous course held in the summer. You will also need to complete a form providing the contact information of your supervising Speech Language Pathologist.

After applying to the SLT-ARL program, you will finish step 6 on the AEL checklist Links to an external site..
*Please note step 5 on the AEL checklist is enrolling in an Educator Preparation Program (SLT-ARL) which you already did.
Complete the SLT-ARL Program after receiving your AEL

- Complete USBE’s SLT Institute
- Work under a Utah licensed SLP for one year (full time equivalency)

Note: An SLT always needs to be supervised by an SLP with a Professional SLP Educator License. To move from the Associate Educator License to the Professional Educator License, candidates must have one full year of supervision AFTER completion of the live SLT Institute. The supervising SLP must have completed USBE's SLP Supervision course to be the direct supervisor of Speech Therapy services.
