UFORA Information

Utah Code Section 53E-6-302

Pursuant to 53E-6-302, beginning on September 1, 2024, a cut score of 240 will be required for licensure in Utah for any teacher candidate receiving either an Elementary, SPED or Early Childhood license. This applies to APPEL candidates whose professional learning plan was established after September 1, 2022.

Preparing to take the UFORA

Participants must receive a cut score of 240 or higher. We recommend completing the ELA methods course then taking the UFORA practice test (link below). If you don't do well on the practice test, a Canvas course covering the elementary literacy standards will be available in January of 2025. This course can be taken as a prep or remediation for the UFORA.

When you are ready, email appel-sped@schools.utah.gov for a voucher and registration information (USBE only pays for the UFORA the first time).

You have taken the UFORA and scored below the 240 cut score:

Score and Options

If you scored between 231 and 239 you can (select one):

    • Participate in the FLEX option ($69)
    • Retake UFORA ($139)
    • Complete three microcredentials ($60; $20 each)

If you scored 230 or lower you can (select one):

    • Retake UFORA
    • Complete three microcredentials

FLEX Option (score 231-239)

If a candidate scores within one standard deviation below the cut score (231-239), they may do the FLEX option with Pearson to increase their score to 240. The Series FLEX assessment allows candidates who narrowly missed passing the UFORA to demonstrate their depth of knowledge through a well developed, written analysis instead of retaking the entire test. Series FLEX submissions are expected to demonstrate a Level 3 or Level 4 depth of knowledge. Passing this assessment fulfills the subject matter test requirement. Please note that submission length requirements for Series FLEX differ from requirements for constructed-response items on the UFORA. More information can be found at https://www.ut.nesinc.com/TestView.aspx?f=HTML_FRAG/NT900_TestPage.html. Links to an external site.

Microcredentials Option (score below 240)

Requires interaction with a class- must successfully complete all three microcredentials

Retake UFORA

Before retaking UFORA we recommend you complete a remediation Canvas course currently in development. It will be ready in January 2025. You may enroll in the course earlier, if you would like to participate as a beta tester. A passing score of 240 or higher is required.

If you were enrolled in APPEL-SpEd, took UFORA and didn't assign your scores to go to APPEL-SpEd (participants only), contact Pearson Links to an external site. and request your score be attached to APPEL-SpEd. Only the participant can do this and it is very important.
