The Crisis Cycle: Escalation Begins

Phase 3: Escalation Begins - Early Signs of Distress

Intensity: Moderate

Description: The student begins to display observable signs of distress. This can manifest as increased internalizing behaviors, such as withdrawal, reduced participation, appearing shut down, or changes in non-verbal cues (e.g., avoiding eye contact, slumped posture). Alternatively, it can present as externalizing behaviors like increased talking, arguing, fidgeting, seeking attention (sometimes negatively), or engaging in low-level conflict-seeking behaviors. The student is starting to struggle to cope effectively.

Adult Responses: The focus shifts to active support and problem-solving. Support the student in identifying and articulating the stressor. Guide them through problem-solving strategies to address it. Offer two to three concrete, manageable choices that empower the student to regain some control or move away from the stressor (e.g., "Would you like to take a break in the quiet corner, or would you prefer to work on a different task for a few minutes?"). Providing choices can help reduce feelings of being overwhelmed and increase cooperation.
