The Crisis Cycle: De-Escalation

Phase 6: De-Escalation - Gradual Return to Baseline

Intensity: High to Moderate

Description: The student begins the slow process of calming down and regaining some control over their behavior. The intensity of their emotional and behavioral responses starts to decrease. However, they are still fragile and susceptible to re-escalation if mishandled.

Adult Responses: Provide the student with the space and quiet support they need to continue de-escalating safely. Avoid making demands, questioning them about the incident, or asking them to take any actions to repair harm at this phase. These can easily trigger a return to a higher level of distress. Your presence should be calm and non-threatening. Allow the student to regulate at their own pace, offering gentle verbal reassurance if appropriate ("It's okay, you're safe").
