Our Program

The Utah Asthma Program (UAP) is located at the Utah Department of Health in the Bureau of Health Promotion. It began in December 2001 with the intent to develop state capacity to address asthma, including an occupational component.

The UAP is funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2014, the program was awarded the Comprehensive Asthma Control through Evidence-based Strategies and Public Health - Health Care Collaboration grant. The cooperative agreement will fund UAP for 5 years to provide comprehensive asthma care by ensuring the availability of and access to guidelines-based medical management and pharmacotherapy to all Utahns with asthma, and to link those with poorly controlled asthma to individualized services. UAP's work plan focuses on three types of strategies to achieve this goal:

Infrastructure strategies to support leadership, strategic partnerships, strategic communications, surveillance, and evaluation
Services strategies to expand school- and home-based services
Health systems strategies to improve coverage, delivery, quality, and use of clinical services.

Expected outcomes from these strategies include better asthma control and quality of life, increased provision of and coverage for comprehensive asthma control services by health care, education, housing, and other organizations, and increased coordination of health care and public health services.
