Cookie Mining.docx Download Cookie Mining.docx I print this out and give a paper copy to every student, though they can work in groups. I use canvas and am usually paperless, but you'll want paper copies for scratch paper.
Preparation warning! You will need to purchase the following items before class when using this activity:
- 3 types of chocolate chip cookies- the difference should be the size of the chips
- Suggestion: some kind of "chunk" cookie-- like Pepperidge Farms
- A name brand chocolate chip cookie- medium size chips
- A store brand cookie- usually in a see-through wrapper. Should be small chips.
- 3 types of mining utensils
- flat toothpicks
- round toothpicks
- paper clips (I set aside a new box-- not used before)
You will also need printed graph paper- any will do, but here is one you can use Download one you can use. Kids need to trace their cookies on the graph paper before they start mining. After they finish mining for the chocolate chips, they can choose to spend another minute of labor costs to clean up their mine before the EPA (the teacher) fines them for environmental impact.
